Many Are Suffering

Estimates say that approximately 300,000 individuals on Long Island suffer from alcoholism and other forms of drug dependence. This number doesn’t take into account the circles of communities and relationships that surround these people; families, congregations, schools etc. These people, whose lives are often as disrupted as that of the alcoholic or addict, number many thousands more in our region.  Unfortunately, many, if not most, do not turn to the help that is available to them.

If you or a family member is suffering from addiction, this confidential and anonymous page can be your first step towards getting help.  It is private and discreet. These resources are non-denominational and recommended by addiction professionals.

About Episcopal Recovery Ministries

The Episcopal Recovery Ministries (ERM) is a ministry dedicated to helping anyone suffering from addictions into recovery. It is a joint effort, of the Commission on Recovery and Addictions, appointed by the Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Long Island and supported by the professional staff and administrative structure of Episcopal Community Services.

The Goal:

Our mission is to provide recovery resources to individuals, families, and congregations who suffer with issues of addiction and co-dependency.  We hope to do this in five ways:

Methods

1. Education Seminars - We provide speakers and workshops for clergy and congregations to learn more about various addictions.  Speakers are among the best in their specific field.

2. Articles – From time to time we will author or publish articles and materials related to addiction and recovery issues in our diocesan newspaper, The Dominion, or here, online.

3. This website's resources and links to other resources such as:

National Episcopal Health Ministries

4. 12 Step Holy Communion - This is a service we would hope to sponsor every three months at Episcopal churches throughout the Long Island area.  They are casual and open to anyone with an addiction or those interested in learning about the spirituality of the 12 Steps.

5. In addition, it is our hope to identify resource people in our area who, when necessary, would be willing to facilitate interventions when called upon by families or congregations. Sometimes, a family member or clergy person needs help to unmask denial and admit that there is actually a problem with alcohol or other addiction. A carefully planned intervention with follow-up assistance and services could help the person set out on the road to recovery.
